Neil Krause, 16, of Chippewa Falls wore a Spider-Man outfit to the premiere showing of ‘Spider-Man 3′ at 12:05 a.m. this morning in Chippewa Falls. Krause said he planned to wear the costume to school today.

I had the privilege to see Spider-Man 3 @ 12am today (aka Thursday night) with one of my students – yes that’s him posed as Spider-Man above. I wanted to share not a movie review, but rather the themes that are very apparent in the movie and would be great discussion with youth.

Here are 5 themes that really stood out to me:

  1. Greed
  2. Revenge
  3. Power
  4. Jealousy
  5. Forgiveness

Without giving away the details of the movie because it’s new, I wanted to say there are so many great clips that I can’t wait to use in the future with this one.

There is a great depiction of Peter’s struggle with the black suit. The black suit that he puts on clearly shows how ugly we really are inside. It reminded me of Romans chapter 1 all the way. When people refuse God, he gives us over to ourselves which is very ugly. Let me share some of it from the New Living Translation:

Rom. 1:21b “As a result, their minds became dark and confused.”

Rom. 1:24 “So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired.”

Rom, 1:29 – “Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, malicious behavior, and gossip” (black spidey).

When Peter put on the suit it shows all the stuff that is really in our hearts if we have rejected God. God doesn’t “do” anything to us, but rather we destroy ourselves; This couldn’t be demonstrated better in the movie.

The interesting part of the movie is at the end when much forgiveness takes place. The carnal side of me didn’t want that to happen (you’ll know what I’m talking about when you see it). I wanted to see punishment. I wanted to see revenge. I wanted to see “*******” destroyed.

It was really something to see the forgiveness take place and how it brought peace to everyone. The same thing happens when we decide to forgive others because God has forgiven us.

Go see this one! Use it to God’s glory with your students!
