Hello! well this was very enlightening! I am a middle school teacher and a member of a small United Methodist church. I just googled "church leader job spec" because we are trying to start 2 youth groups in our church(we have Sunday School). We have always had volunteers to run our 2 youth groups but, since we never developed a standard for them, the result is sort of a whoever can do whatever, and whenever. One year we can have a leader who can bond and do some great things with students and the next we can have someone who doesn't have a clue and doesn't even like working with adolescents. So, although having a leader who is very sincere and youth oriented is great, we are writing a job spec so they know what the expectation is (meet with the kids each week, utilze scripture to teach in a fun/relavent way, encourage participatory learning, that is, students suggest topics and plan meetings, lead activities, communicate with parents) That's basically it. Attending committee meetings are optional as long as there is some sort of communication.

I am an 20 year youth ministry nut who has finally been called out of youth ministry... it was one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made in my life. The job descriptions have always been ridiculous and only been able to be used to give committees and certain church members something to hang over your head if they feel like you aren't doing your job... My passion has always ben discipleship... That's what God has called me to recently and I have taken a position as a Pastor of Spiritual Formations. The church I came to had no clue how to put together a job description for this position as they have never seen anything like it so I had the opportunity to write my own. It was simple... direct... and explained exactly what we were doing and why I would be the spiritual cartographer for the church and its people...

The funniest thing is this... I'm super excited about what I am doing every week and my job/workload is probably cut in half... yet, I'm being paid almost twice what I was as a youth minister... and the members of this church think my job holds more responsibility. The very cool thing is this... I was given the opportunity to over see our student pastor. I am helping the church to offer him freedom in his position and giving him the ability to minister in his areas of giftedness... He has already told me he has never felt more free in youth ministry.

Love this topic...
