Write An Old Fashioned Letter Once-A-Month

11 September 2008 2 Comments

This Team Building Thursday is something very simple and practicle, but you wouldn’t believe the mileage that you can get out of this!

If you haven’t done this before or in awhile, I would suggest writing a good old fashion letter to those that help in your youth ministry.

Here’s why:

1) It’s tangible. We live in an electronic age and most people are flooded with emails all day, but when you get something in the mail, you get to actually put your hands on it and stop for a minute to look at what you got in your hands.

2) It takes a little more time and effort. Sorry to say, but to actually get a piece of paper out, write on it, fold it up and put it in an evelope, maybe even lick it just takes more time than emailing something out. This shows your volunteer that you have personally thought of them more than just an email.

3) It costs something. Yeah, you got to put that stamp on it. Now I do realize that this will probably come out of the youth or administrative budget, but so what. When something is purchased their is more value to it. Again this will come across big in the eyes of your volunteers.

4) Many times they are kept. I still have an encouragement letter that is filed, but if needed I can go back and grab it to be reminded of things. We all need reminders and encouragement. Having something tangible is still meaningful.

What else do you do to make these letters more valuable?

Yes, I do this all the time. This is great non-gathered ministry! I try and purchase boxed cards for all sort of occasions, thank you cards, encouragement, birthday, sympathy, graduation, etc and keep them all in one of my big desk drawers. This allows me to grab a card right at hand as needed. Birthday cards are great ideas to send out – esp. to volunteers, then you can include words of encouragment right in the letter!
