Summer time is quickly approaching and before we know it, we will be hugging students that are graduating and beginning summer ministry.

If you are a part of a demonation typically there are camps available for you every summer. If you are non-denominational then you can pick and choose a camp that would be beneficial for students or you could put together your own camp.

Here are some things to think through as you pray about putting together your own camp:

  • Dates – When will the camp be and for how long? Make sure that you do the best to pick a week that is the best option for most people. There will ALWAYS be someone it doesn’t work for.
  • Team – Got to have a camp team to get the job done. This all depends too on what you want to accomplish and what types of things you want to be doing. Select a team based on what you believe God would want you to accomplish with the camp.
  • Location – Pick the location again based on what you want to accomplish. This may mean renting a facility or going survivor like with tents (also depends on the size of the group). If you to have a hiking part of your camp then the location needs to be close to a place where you can do this.
  • Spiritual Goal – What is it that you envision God doing for these students? What would you like to see happen spiritually? Based on this then structure the camp time to work towards this or these goals.

I think that if you plan ahead, create vision and purpose, build a team, and work hard at getting it done – having your own camp could end up being very cool! Cation: there are many administrative things to think about if you are to do this, so if you aren’t administrative get someone on your team that can handle that because they can work to get all the details together while you lead out with the vision and spiritual goal of the camp.

If you have any experience putting together a camp of any size please share…

Steven says:

I have never planned my own camp. However, I’m also not of the “adminstrative” persuasion. I stink at that kind of stuff! But, I do love hanging out with kids and that’s why I’m a youth guy.

I would recommend a book for all youth ministers not of the administrative persuasion. This book is the “Bible” of how to survive in an office when know next to nothing about administration. It’s called “Youth Ministry Management Tools” by Ginny Olson, Diane Elliot, and Mike Work, published by Zondervan.

It was a gift to me when I graduated college from the associate pastor at my internship and it has graced the corner of my desk for the last 11 months. With chapters on organizing your time, finances, calendaring, team building, and event managing along w/ worksheets, it has been a life saver.

Wow, I kind of feel like Billy Mays or the ShamWow guy. Sorry for the informercial, but I LOVE this book and I highly recommend it.
